Why meditate? Many beings come to the study of Dharma (the teachings of Buddhist psychology) and the practice of meditation to change something. Perhaps you are drawn to meditation because you want more calm, less distraction, more happiness, less pain and suffering. Yet according to the Buddha, we do not need to "get" anything. Rather, we simply need to uncover the clear, calm, loving, mind that shines underneath the clouds of our confusion.
But can meditation help us in daily life? Can it help us to be a better partner, parent, or friend? The answer is Yes. Mindfulness and Dharma don't just belong on the meditation cushion. They belong in our life and in our relationships. In order to relate and connect more skillfully, we need to see beneath the stories our mind creates. Mind states come and go. The trick is to change the suffering states to states of happiness and calm. As the Dalai Lama has said "my religion is kindness". Training the mind leads to kindness in thought, word and deed.
